In 2018 we celebrated 100 years!
That’s right – Golden Square Baths, as we were formally known, opened on Saturday 2 February 1918. After decades of debate, the baths opened in the presence of 2600 eager swimmers, signalling a now century of success and memories. We were also the first pool in the greater Bendigo region that incorporated mixed bathing… raising eyebrows at the time, and kick-starting a campaign for a similar development in Eaglehawk. As stated in the Bendigonian on Thursday 7 February 1918, “the committee deserved special commendation, for it had done something substantial for the people of Golden-square and Bendigo. By providing the means of teaching young people to swim the baths would be of inestimable benefit to the Golden-square dis-trcit and the community generally.” We can only hope that we, 100 years on, can continue the legacy of the people of Golden Square, and the founding committee of the Golden Square Baths, and provide a place, a pool, for all to come together and enjoy, and feel like one.
